This June, the Power Pioneers programme kicked off with an action-packed residential for 14 young people. The programme is dedicated to powering up young people living in Foyers to create real change in their world. For two days these talented young people connected to discuss issues that really matter to them, built their knowledge and skills, and found their confidence to campaign for change. It was a powerful and inspirational experience!

Meeting for the first time at High Leigh Conference Centre, the Power Pioneers quickly got to know each other over lunch and through a workshop exploring power in interactive and energetic activities. In the evening, the group bonded over a campfire – toasted marshmallows included! – and high-stakes table tennis and football games. On the second day, ACT BUILD CHANGE delivered immersive and fun workshops covering key topics for up-and-coming community organisers such as relationship building, campaign techniques, action planning, leadership and looking after yourself and your community.

“The treasure hunt was so good as we got to work together and get to know other people.” Power Pioneer

“My favourite part was the sports and the bonfire, I have liked getting to know new people and learning new things.” Power Pioneer

“I have learnt that most Foyer residents are passionate about making change.” Power Pioneer

"I feel a bit more confident after learning about Power." Power Pioneer

A lot of young people are passionate, energetic, and eager to act on issues they care about. However, they are not always provided with opportunities that nurture their individual or collective voice. It was great to see young people coming out of their shell during the Power Pioneers residential.

“I feel more confident, it's been nice seeing different people and seeing people I've met before again, I liked the 1-1's.” Power Pioneer

“That everyone is different and everyone is Powerful in their own way.” Power Pioneer

Feedback from Foyer Staff

"Just wanted to say a huge thank you for the Power Pioneers 23 away days. Both T and I had a fantastic time. T talked about her time all the way home and took so many positives from it. She really pushed herself out of her comfort zone and felt so proud of herself. She said she made some really good connections and is excited about getting together again. We spent the journey home reflecting and planning how we are going to move her actions forward." Deputy Foyer Manager

“Young people never cease to amaze me with how open they are to share and learn.” Foyer Learning and Support Officer

“Young people have a good understanding of power + change but need training and guidance to make change happen.” Foyer Project Officer

"S has been talking about visiting other Foyers to share ideas and see how others live. To get residents who are a lot more introverted and quiet to engage more and he wants to potentially become an ambassador. A big change in 2 days from a quiet and withdrawn young person! Thank you."  Foyer Project Worker

Power Pioneers is funded by The Listening Fund and will run for six months from June to November 2023. Continued support will be provided for three months post programme for those who wish to accelerate their action.
