This week, the Foyer Federation is launching a grant-making programme to offer financial support for young people ready to move on.

The Moving On Up fund, developed in partnership with LandAid, will provide grants of up to £1000 to 100 young people to help them leap over common financial hurdles and take up new tenancies in independent accommodation.

Young people living in our member services can apply for a grant to cover some of those essential costs. These include:

  • A deposit for a property
  • Rent payment in advance
  • Dual rent payments
  • Utilities bills in advance
  • Debt repayment
  • Moving costs, eg van hire, packing materials
  • White goods, eg fridge/freezer, washing machine
  • Some soft furnishings, eg curtains, carpets

We are offering this funding as a response to the growing concern among young people about the cost of living crisis. Following the tough pandemic years, young people now face rising bills and living costs at a crucial time in their journey to an independent, thriving future. It’s becoming harder to save up for those essential costs that come with moving on.

In our most recent Big Questions survey, the number of young people who reported the cost of living as a major challenge jumped from 4% in November 2021 to 30.9% in July 2022. That sharp increase was a loud and clear message that we needed to support young people to overcome those financial hurdles that might hold people back from progressing.

20 young people will receive a grant by the end of March 2023, and another 80 by the end of March 2024. To find out more about the Moving On Up fund, visit the web page here.
