By becoming a member of the Foyer Federation, we pledge to implement and sustain Advantaged Thinking practices across our service(s). Specifically, we pledge to:

Talk using Advantaged Thinking language: we use positive language and imagery to identify and define the people we work with, in ways that respect their individual humanity and potential.

Use Advantaged Thinking to Understand: we always seek to understand people not just in terms of their support needs and challenges, but through their abilities, potential and individuality.

Work in an Advantaged Thinking way: we continually look to create a sensible balance between supporting problems or managing performance, and developing people’s strengths and potential; we work with people through enabling approaches to stimulate trust and belief, grow skills and capabilities, and lead to sustainable outcomes.

Invest in people: across financial, human, physical, programme and partner resources, we invest in people to enable them to progress through experiences of surviving and coping towards more sustainable, thriving livelihoods.

Believe in people: we hold an unflinching recognition of the value and humanity of everyone we work with; we distinguish between someone’s behaviour and their identity, and sustain high expectations and aspirations for the people we work with during challenging periods.

Involve people: we involve people as active agents in their lives and the services we provide, including by harnessing individual experiences and insights to shape approaches, collaborate on solutions, and ensure authenticity and accountability.

Challenge disadvantaged thinking: we challenge ourselves and others in our services, local community, wider sector and society to talk about, understand, work with, invest in, believe in and involve people in a positive, asset-based way.

We understand that this is an ongoing process, not a destination, and commit to continually holding ourselves to the ideas and practices of Advantaged Thinking in our day to day work and across our service(s).
